Position Summary:

The Asphalt Roller Operator Trainee assists with the operation of asphalt roller equipment under the guidance of experienced team members. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals who are interested in learning the paving trade. The trainee supports the compaction process and helps ensure that work is performed safely and to project standards, while gaining experience with equipment and job site procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with (and actively promote) all Safety policies and procedures including reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses to ensure adherence to our Number One Core Value – Safety, first in everything we do. 
  • Assist in operating roller equipment under supervision to help compact hot mix asphalt.
  • Learn how to perform pre- and post-operation equipment checks, including fluid levels, tire pressure, and basic safety features.
  • Work alongside experienced operators and foremen to understand rolling patterns, compaction techniques, and how to meet project specifications.
  • Observe and help with rolling around joints, corners, and edges to ensure smooth surface transitions.
  • Keep the roller clean and report any issues or equipment concerns to the supervisor.
  • Show up on time and be prepared for daily safety briefings and team huddles.
  • Support other crew members as needed, including general labor tasks on the paving crew.
  • Develop an understanding of how compaction affects the durability and finish of asphalt pavement.
  • Stay flexible to work extended hours, including night shifts or weekends, based on project needs.

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • 0-1 year of experience operating asphalt roller equipment. 
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to endure physical labor, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and handle the demands of the job.
  • Knowledge of asphalt rolling techniques and the ability to follow complex instructions.
  • Familiarity with project specifications and an understanding of asphalt composition and compaction requirements.
